AboutFlow Training 2013: Venue

Tinos

Tinos is a Greek island situated in the Cyclades archipelago of the Aegean Sea. The closest islands are Andros, Delos, and Mykonos. It has a land area of approximately 194 square kilometres and a population of about 10.000 inhabitants. Tinos is famous amongst Greeks for the Church of Panagia vangelistria, its 80 or so windmills, about 1000 artistic dovecotes, 50 active villages and its Venetian fortifications at the mountain, Exobourgo. On Tinos, both Greek Orthodox and Roman Catholic populations co-exist, and the island is also well known for its famous sculptors and painters, such as N. Gysis, Y. Chalepas and N. Lytras.

Because of the Panagia Evangelistria church, with its reputedly miraculous icon of Virgin Mary that it holds, Tinos is also the center of a yearly pilgrimage that takes place on the date of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary (15 August). This is perhaps the most notable and still active yearly pilgrimage in the region of the eastern Mediterranean.

Tinos has a varied landscape. From the shores of Panormos and Kolimbithra on the North Shore to Kionia, Agios Fokas, and Agios Sostis on the Southern Shore, Tinos has many beaches, just to name a few. Tsiknias is the highest mountain on the island at 750 meters and hides the quaint village of Livada. The mountain of Exobourgo is quite distinct, and unlike its more rounded Cycladic neighbors, has a more jagged appearance that would be more at home in the Alps. The area around Volax is a surreal and very unusual landscape with giant boulders some the size of multistory buildings. The village of Volax lies at the center of this amazing landscape. To the west, the mountains surrounding Pyrgos are full of some of the most beautiful green marble in all of Greece.

All around the island of Tinos, the islanders have made the most incredible things out of stone. The hills are all terraced with stone walls; every little village is connected to its most proximate neighbors by stone walkways set between a parallel set of stone walls.

Workshop Venue

The workshop will take place in the Cultural Foundation of Tinos, in the city/port of Tinos. This was established in 2002; its purpose is to conduct and promote research about the island’s history, art, culture and traditions. The Cultural Foundation is housed in a magnificent neoclassic building, dominating the town quay. The Cultural Foundation comprises modern exhibition, conference and multipurpose halls. It hosts various venues all year round, such as art exhibits and cultural events, as well as Greek and international conferences, making it the heart of the island’s cultural life. The Cultural Foundation is provided with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment

How to Get There

Tinos has two ports, one for passenger speed boats and one for ferries and highspeed boats which carry passengers and cars to other ports, including Mykonos (35 min), Piraeus, Rafina, Andros and Syros. There are regular buses linking Tinos town with other villages on the island.

From Athens International Airport:

  1. To city center:
  2. To Piraeus port:
  3. To Rafina port (from where several ferries sail for Tinos either in the morning or
    afternoon).
    • By regional buses – KTEL or by taxi (by taxi, it takes no more than 30 min.)

Practically, those who wish to catch the first morning ferry to Tinos (from either Pireaus or Rafina port; departures between 7:15 and 8:30, depending on season) should spend the night before in Athens. In such a case, spending the night at a Hotel at either Pireaus or Rafina (in walking distance from the port) is an alternative solution. In the afternoon, ferry boats usually sail from the Rafina port at 17:00 (still depending on season; see details below; trip duration 4h, one-way ticket ~25 Euro). Highspeed boats sail more frequently (trip duration ~2h, one-way ticket ~50 Euro).
